EOTO Presentation Reaction: A Technological Telegram and Instant Camera

How polaroids and telegrams developed into online communication.

The Each One Teach One presentations where extremely eye-opening to how technology has changed and stayed the same throughout history. I presented the project on the first American Newspaper. One thing that everyone thought was interesting is the concept of the editors leaving the final page blank, for readers to respond to the newspaper. It is extremely similar to how we communicate online. When someone writes a story people can easily comment and respond to the topics being discussed. People can also post their own articles online. Similarly, people could write about politics and have their work published too. Although the technology was different the way in which individuals published their thoughts and responded to others was very similar.

A presentation that really stood out to me was Corrina’s presentation on Instagram. One of her fun facts was about the name of Instagram. It started as the app called Bourbon. It was called this after the creator of the apps favorite drink. However, it evolved into what we call Instagram today. Instagram comes from two words: telegram and instant camera. A telegram was a way of communication. People could write or print a letter and it would be delivered by a messenger. An instant camera is a camera that will take a picture, print the picture, and develop the picture all within a few minutes. An instant camera was also the apps first icon. The idea of the app is to be able to instantly snap a shot and post it to give brief updates or messages to followers on what you are doing in your daily life. It is extremely interesting that the name Instagram came from two older technologies and was developed to reflect those technologies in an updated technological way.
